Area of work: His primary interest is in
harmonic analysis, especially when linked with probability.
His most recent work has focused on Markov
chains and random walks on finite groups and other algebraic
systems. Kenneth Ross had already visited India twice before coming to the Mathematical Sciences Foundation. In
1971 he lectured at a summer course on harmonic analysis for
college teachers and in 1995 he was one of the speakers at an
international conference on harmonic analysis.
Publications and Position held:
Ross's major publications include the encyclopedic work "Abstract
Harmonic Analysis" in two volumes, co-authored with Edwin
Hewitt, as well as "The Theory of Calculus". Prof.
Ross is currently editor of the "Carus Mathematical Monographs".
Between 1971 and 1996 he held leading positions in both the
American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Mathematical
Association of America (MAA), including the role of the President of the MAA.
