The candidate should be creative and have a desire to learn.

The projects can broadly be classified in the following categories (Some examples of possible projects are provided under each category):
- Finance:- Designing a Mutual Fund, Simulating option pricing models
- Space Science:- Launch of a Space Craft, Maneuvering a Satellite
- Computer Science:- Search Engines, Image Processing
- Mathematical Biology:- Population Dynamics, Genetics
- Statistics:- Monte Carlo Techniques, Waiting Time Problems
- Applications of Number Theory:- Encryption, Error Correction

Selected students will be mentored by experienced faculty.

The internships will involve a mix of classes, computer labs, group meetings, and online interaction. It is expected that on average the interns will meet with their mentors once a week.
- Each intern will work, in a group, on a project from one of the categories listed above. (While filling the application form, please rank the categories in order of preference. The final allotment, however, will be made by MSF.)

Interns will also work on projects in Mathematics Education, in which they will create interactive and inspiring lessons for school students.
- The precise schedule will be worked out after the selection process, with the aim of creating a schedule that can satisfy as many of the selected students' constraints as possible.
- The venues will similarly be finalized at that stage.
