An Introduction to IAYM 2010

The Mathematical Sciences Foundation announces summer internships designed to stimulate creativity through ‘hands on’ applications of mathematics with the help of computing techniques. The internships shall encourage teamwork, communication and computational skills and out of the box thinking through real world applications.

Selected students:

  • Shall be taught computer programming and software packages along with mathematics

  • Shall be provided access to a computer laboratory

  • Shall be paid a total stipend of Rs. 5000/-

  • Shall be provided free board , lodging and rail fare if from outstation

  • Shall be mentored by experienced and well known faculty

  • Shall also work on projects in mathematics education

The projects are:

  1. Face Detection
‘How are faces detected by your digital cameras? Are monkey faces different from human ones? Create new methods and improve on existing ones!’

  2. Virus-Antivirus
Defense Against the Dark Arts? Why blindly trust your antivirus software? First create a virus that is your own. And then…fight it!

  3. Mathematical Biology
What distinguishes you from your sick classmate? The answers lie in your genes, and like always, in numbers. Also, is there anything in common between your DNA structure and say, Cleopatra’s? You’d be surprised!

  4. Mutual Funds
‘Mutual fund investments are subject to market risk’. Really? Why? Create your own mutual fund and tell us why!

  5. Queuing Theory
How exactly do the powers-that-are decide on the frequency at which a metro should run at any given hour on any given day? How come the traffic light at one crossing stays red for precisely 3 minutes, while another stays red for a mere37 seconds? Delve into the science of ‘Queuing Theory’ and look for answers.

  6. Encryption
From secret messages passed in ancient wars to the safety of your gmail account, encryption has played a role in defining and redefining our lives. Understand the theory behind these systems, and look at creating something you can call your own!

  7. Space Science
Design a rocket - and understand why India's achievements in space are inspiring. Explore various facets through physical models.

  8. Renewable/Alternate Energy
Create working models of solar/wind energy generators through simulations.
