Now, maths course on search engines

MATHEMATICS is not just numbers but serious
life business is what the students at the Mathematical Sciences
Foundation (MSF) in St. Stephen’s College are out to
prove. They are trying to work out the calculations behind
search engines such as Google.

The new programme in Mathematical Engineering and Information
Technology to be launched by MSF next week will be all about
making search engines and ways to protect database. |
“The programme is all about image compression- compressing
data so that it is not lost while retrieving. One of their projects
would comprise creating a desktop search engines all by themselves,”
said Dr. Sanjeev Agrawal. Tata Interactive Systems Limited would
be certifying the seven-month programme along with the MSF.
The MSF is also opening a concurrent centre for its programme
in Mathematical Finance at South Campus from August 16. |
“Many Management students come to us because mathematics
is largely used in stock markets and pricing of products. But
most people who pass out of business schools are unaware of
these elementary tactics as the training focuses mainly on management
rather that derivatives and probability, which we teach here,”
said Vipul Kumar, Business Manager with MSF.

The course, which is running for six years now would soon
have a South Delhi centre at British School, Chanakyapuri.
“The companies that we interned in are actually applying
softwares and techniques devised by us in their projects,”
said Amit Chandra, an MSc Student from the foundation which
is full time programme in association with University of Houston. |
