New Delhi, Jan. 1: Distinguished mathematicians from across the world will come
together to reflect on the theme "Mathematics in the Twentieth century" at a
four-day conference beginning from Monday in the capital.
Organized by India Mathematical Sciences Foundation and co-sponsored by French
embassy, the international conference is being held to commemorate birth
centenary of French national Andre Weil, one of the greatest mathematicians of
the last century.
Prof. Dinesh Singh, Director MSF said: "Mr Weil who as a young professor in his
early twenties had come from Paris to India way back in 1930 was a first
mathematics professor of Aligarh University.
Remembered for his significant contributions in various aspects of mathematics,
Weil, during his stay in India deeply influenced young |
mathematicians through direct connection with them. In all these period he was
himself influenced by Indian philosophy.
Hence Indian mathematicians have inseparable bond with him. By bringing various
mathematicians from the various parts of the globe, some of whom were his
disciples as well, it is our small gesture to pay tributes to this great
personality." A child prodigy, Weil had developed a knack for learning
languages besides exhibiting an extraordinary talent studying science,
mathematics and humanities. Mr. Deepak Pental,vice-chancellor of Delhi
University will inaugurate the conference and over 30 prominent mathematicians
from Frame, Canada, China, USA, Australia, Luxembourg, Italy, Chennai,
Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi will be sharing thoughts on the theme interspersed
with |
remembrances of Weil. Various interesting reposts and presentations will be
tabled during brain storming sessions in the four days besides giving an
opportunity to Indian professors, mathematics research scholars and students to
meet and interact with the top mathematicians of the world. Some of the
prominent experts of mathematics who will participate in the conference include
Prof. Zhou Xiangyu of Academy of mathematics and systems sciences for China,
Prof George Willis of University of Newcastle from Australia, Prof. JP Kahane
of University of Paris-Sud Orsay from France and Prof. Marie-Francois Roy,
