Helpline to help kids overcome fear of Maths begins today

Express News Service

The Mathematical Sciences Foundation (MSF) will soon launch a helpline for Class X and XII math students on Thursday. It will be operational till February 21 and manned by the faculty from 9am to 2 PM. Students can send in their queries by phone, fax or e-mail. The faculty will focus on math queries as well as help students with other emotional and psychological problems.

And at other helplines for students appearing for Board examinations, which were activated just a few weeks back, call-evaluation shows a new trend this year ---- students are asking more CBSC-related questions. Snehi, an NGO that started its helplilne in January, says on an average it gets 40 calls a day. And this number primarily asks CBSC- related questions and not just seek emotional and psychological help.

So far the call centre has received 561 calls from students, parents, teachers and even school counsellors. While 110 of these callers were Class X students, 129 were Class VII students. Almost 118 asked questions about CBSC (they were referred to the Board office). Almost 104 callers suffered from different levels of emotional and psychological problems- - most of them related to relationships.

Last year, the helpline had attended to 1,447 calls of which majority were students who were psychologically distressed and emotionally perturbed.

About 20 per cent of the calls last year sought specific information regarding exams. Last year 46 students had psychological problems of which 14 were suicidal.
