Sound Foundation
A mathematical outfit enables students to gain that extra edge

HUMA SIDDIQUI
ABOUT nine year ago, Dr. Dinesh Singh dreamt about creating an academic institution of the highest standards in India, where creativity would lead to all-round benefits for society. He wanted an institution that would bring together the best practices of a Harvard or an MIT and merge these with the ancient wisdom of this country.

When Dr. Singh, a professor of mathematics, University of Delhi, and also an adjunct professor of Houston, US shared his dream with a group of young friends, it led to the birth of Mathematical Sciences Foundation (MSF) in the Capital. It's engaged in the task of creating a role model for higher education driven by the engine of mathematics.

MSF is a non- profit organisation founded by some of India's leading citizens and mathematicians, scientists and prominent corporate personalities like: MV Subbiah, executive chairman, EID Parry; jaithirth Rao, chairman BSL Mphasi's, Ravi Bahi former head Citibank(Indonesia), and Madhabi Puri Buch, general manager ICICI Bank Ltd. Naresh Chandra, Former ambassador to the U.S., and N.K. Sinha, secretary planning, are member of the advisory board.

Currently MSF runs form St. Stephen's College under the chairmanship of Dr. Anil Wilson, Principal of the college. The courses run by MSF are regular courses where students can apply at St. Stephen's .

MSF wants to enhance the intellectual growth and self-confidence, encouraging youngsters to think, analysis and find solutions independently and originally, and to get student admissions and scholarships for higher studies in some of prestigious universities and management institutes across the world, according to Dr. Singh

Says Dr. Singh. "In fact, at MSF, we have Msc programmes of the University of Houston in mathematics, mathematical finance and computational maths. These programmes are recognized by the university, for which students, after picking up credits here, are eligible to get scholarships to do further studies there. We also have a programme in information technology and simulations which is certified jointly by Tata Interactive Systems Ltd. Another programme in mathematical finance is jointly certified by ICICI Bank Ltd."

Says Ashoke K Nath, a former student who had done a course in mathematics at MSF and president of IndoAmerican Chamber of Commerce, Greater Houston, and chief executive officer of GAS-Tel Inc, Houston, Texas, U.S.: " I am happy to contribute even in terms of money and infrastructure to the MSF society. I have known Dr. Singh for many years and he has shared his vision with my colleagues and me." According to Suvrat Raju, who is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Physics at Harvard, "The experience of doing a course in mathematics have been the best thing to have happened to me during my three years in college.
