NEW DELHI, JULY 6 |
IN an attempt to improve the quality of mathematics taught
at Delhi schools, The Mathematical Sciences Foundation, of which
Stephen’s College and the ICICI Bank are institutional
members, is launching a number of school programmes this month.
A series of workshops beginning 20 July, for students form Class
VI to XI and teachers training will be held in the Capital.
The workshop aims to improve students’ performance in
exams and competitions; create focus and discipline for studying
mathematics in natural and useful way; generate mathematical
skills and accelerate learning through ‘hands on’
practice; bring confidence, insight and joy into learning; and
develop communication skills.

“After we started the math’s helpline for schools
during the board examinations we realized how weak the students
base was in the subjects. They did not know the basics and we
want to try and set a role model in higher education in maths
through the foundation, “ said Vipul Kumar, business manager,
MSF.
Over 100 students from public and government schools will enjoy
the workshop. “We will brief them about the different
handy-tools that could be used to solve certain problems and
we also have some software through which they can learn more
logically and hands- on,” said Kumar.
|
Workshops for teachers will focus on improving communication
skills and knowledge for interviews; hands-on training in class
room situations to help teach better; training in technology;
and guidance for job placements.
“It has been a while
since teachers were trained with all the new methods possible.
Also it is an attempt to improve communication between a teacher
and a student,” said Kumar.
|
The teacher training certification is meant for those in the
jobs as well as those aspiring to be math’s teachers.
The six-month programme will begin at the Mathematics Resource
Centre, Vasant Vally School, Vasant Kunj. The workshop for students
will begin on 15 July. At the Indian School, JB Tito Marg, Sadiq
Nagar, New Delhi, in after-school hours.
Dr. Dinesh Singh, Director of the foundation said: “This
is a part of a much deeper scheme to improve the usage of math's
at all levels in society and create a strong foundation. One
can only do that if the foundation is made stronger at school
level.”
